How To Restore Outdoor Furniture

After stumbling across a set of outdoor chairs at my local tip for $5 each, instead of thinking “ewww” I thought “wowww”

This project was about salvaging outdoor furniture from ending up in landfill and saving money on buying new outdoor chairs for our fire pit area. After stumbling across these chairs at my local tip for $5 each, I was totally undeterred by the rust and bumps because I could see they had so much potential. Plus they’re soooo comfy! With restoration projects it always comes down to having the best materials by your side and I knew this project would be possible thanks to Rust-Oleum’s Stops Rust Crystal Clear Enamel and 2X Ultra Cover Paint & Primer, which are perfect for protecting and reviving tired outdoor furniture. Read on to find out how I brought these beautiful outdoor chairs back to their original beauty.

How To

Step 1: Begin by brushing the chairs with a wire brush, which will help to remove some of the rust. Following this, use an orbital sander to smooth down any areas on the chairs where the powder coated paint has peeled off. Wipe the chairs down from dust to prep for the next step.

Step 2: Wearing gloves, apply the rust remover all over the chairs with a clean cloth. Set the chairs aside for 30 minutes to an hour to allow the rust remover to settle in. You may need to apply another layer of rust remover. If so, repeat Step 2.

Step 3: In a well ventilated area, use a damp clean cloth to remove the rust remover from the chairs and set aside to completely dry.

Story 4: In a well ventilated area, apply one coat of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Crystal Clear Enamel all over the chairs. Set aside to dry for at least 30 minutes or until completely dry.

Story 5: In a well ventilated area, apply one coat of Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Paint & Primer all over the chairs. Set aside to completely dry.

Ta daaaa!

I am thrilled with the result! Sometimes with these projects less is more. You don’t need to change the colour, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on materials or buy any special power tools. All you need is Rust-Oleum by your side. It’s about celebrating the life these chairs have already lived and protecting them for years to come. And now I’m so excited to see what else I can do in our beautiful fire pit area. Stay tuned!
