How To Make Your Puck Lights Warmer

Got puck lights? Want to make them warmer and less fluorescent? Same! As you know I have been designing and making DIY wall sconces for our home recently (have you seen these Wavy Wall Sconces and these Fluted Wall Sconces yet?) and I've been using puck lights as the light source. Puck lights are battery operated lights that come with a remote control, which is perfect if you are looking to add an accent light into your space at home (whether you rent or own) but don't want to get an electrician involved. You can also turn them on and off with your hands - genius!

Most puck light are a cool white, which is totally fine if that's the colour you like. It's typically used more during the day, but I personally prefer tungsten warm white lights. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I could change the cool tone of the puck light to a warm tone, and discovered photography gel filters that come in a variety of colours in a multitude of shades. A photography gel filter is a thin sheet of coloured plastic film that photographers and cinematographers use to colour a light source. They are perfect to use for changing the cool white puck lights to warm white. Ok, let's get started! And make sure you watch this video here to see how this all came together with my own wall sconces.

BEFORE (cool white) & AFTER (warm white)

The difference is subtle in the daylight, when I took these photos. But if you look closely, you'll see the difference between the cool white and the warm white. It makes a huge difference at night!

How To

Choose the orange photography gel you are going to use. I chose the second lightest.

Cut out a square from the photography gel that generously covers the puck light. Using painters tape, stick the photography gel over the puck light in your wall sconce. Try and make sure there are no gaps.

And that's it! A quick little hack that will instantly make your space feel cosy and inviting.

It's pretty special how quickly you can change the feel of your space by simply adding a photography gel over your puck lights. Cool white lights are great for the day, but warm white lights are cosy and relaxing in the evenings when you want to wind down after a long day. I hope you enjoyed this week's home hack!
