Making An Upcycled Basket Desk

Make this desk in under an hour - true story!

As you know I love using unexpected materials in unexpected ways and when I came across a round woven basket at KMart a couple of months ago, I found myself stacking two on top of each other right in the middle of the aisle. You better believe I got thrown some curious looks in my direction but an idea started forming and I couldn’t stop thinking about it - could use these woven baskets to make a desk? Naturally, I had to give it a try.

The baskets were more than I would usually spend ($140 for 4) so I wanted to keep the rest of the costs down. I started looking at large pieces of timber to use for the top of the desk but they were too expensive or narrow. As luck would have it, I was at my local tip shop a few days later and happened to walk past a stack of unwanted doors, and I knew straight away I could use one of them. Keep reading to find out how I made my own desk, using baskets and a door.

🕒 Project Time Estimate: Less than 1 hour (not including paint drying time)

💰 Materials Cost: $150

Tools

  • Tape measure

How To

Step 1: The door was too long for the space in my studio so I clamped it to my work bench and cut it down to 1500mm. I sanded the door to remove the existing paint just a little bit and applied two coats of paint.

Step 2: I stacked and glued the baskets on top of each other using construction adhesive. Then I applied glue to the top of the stacked baskets and placed the painted door on top. And that’s it!

Ta daaaa!

This has been one of the most fun upcycles I’ve done in a long while! And it was quite refreshing to only have to execute a few simple steps to create a statement desk in my studio, which I am totally obsessed with.
