Upcycled Glass Brick Vase

I canNOT believe this actually worked!

When I made my Upcycled Glass Brick Bookends last week, a few of you asked if I thought it would be possible to make a vase using the secondhand glass bricks I scored on FB Marketplace and it got me thinking. I had seen another creator make one using an angle grinder, but like a lot of other people, I am not confident in doing that (never say never though).

I parked the idea but when my friend sent me a text and asked if it was possible to make a smaller hole, I started thinking about it again. Would it be possible to drill a hole into glass? I wasn’t sure but I was willing to do a bit more investigating. At the very least, if it didn’t work I would have fun trying and it wouldn’t be a huge financial loss because the glass bricks cost $2 each.

I went to Bunnings and found a set of RYOBI Glass & Tile Drill Bits. Sure I could use these to drill a few small holes into a glass brick? Read on to find out…

How To Clean Glass Bricks

Firstly you’ll most likely need to clean your secondhand glass brick. If you do, head over to this tutorial for my practical step by step guide for easily getting rid of glue, grime, and dirt from glass bricks.

How To

Step 1: Decide how many holes you want to make and where. I decided to drill 5 holes - 3 along the upper side and 2 down the lower side. I probably could have done more but I was nervous I would shatter the glass.

Step 2: Starting with the largest drill bit, hold the glass brick, turn your drill on and press it down firmly onto the spot you want to make a hole. Keep going, and going, and going. Take a break after a minute or so, wipe the dust away with the brush, and start drilling.

Step 3: When you can see that the largest drill bit head is about halfway into the glass, switch to the next size down drill bit. Repeat Step 2. The move onto the smallest drill bit and keep drilling until finally breaking through the glass and making the first hole.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you have the the quantity of holes you need. And I recommend listening to a podcast while drilling :)

Step 5: Fill the glass brick vase with water. Gather some greenery (or flowers) and peel back the leaves at the bottom of each stem. Place the stems into the holes. And that’s it!

Ta daaa!

I am so happy this worked! And I can’t believe how easy it was. All you need is a drill and glass drill bits, which I’ve linked to above. I hope this project has inspired you to make an Upcycled Glass Brick Vase. Me? I’m going figure out what I'm upcycling next with these glass bricks.
