Making A Crochet Top With Bows (Using A Table Runner!)

Turning a crochet tablecloth into a top? Yes!

But let’s quickly rewind. As you know I am loving bows a lot right now, so my mind has been busy thinking about all the ways I can incorporate them into my projects. I thrifted a crochet table runner over a year ago and honestly, I haven’t used it once. I wasn't sure if I should keep it, donate or try to do something else but when I hung it on a coat hanger, I looked at it and realised it had tonnes of potential to be turned into something else - a top! And on a whim I decided to give it a try! And I realised if this worked out, I would get more use out of it and the girl math will look much better. Well, that's what I'm telling myself anyway.

I used another top as a pattern to guide where I needed to cut the neckline. And it was at this stage it felt like I was going to get into big trouble. Who does this to a beautiful crochet runner? Ummm, me! At least I found hand sewing the collar numbed my guilt. For the sides I tied cute bows using ribbon and that's it! Best of all? It's so soft and cosy to wear.

Before & After

Project Details

✂️ Making: DIY Crochet Top with Bows - using a crochet table runner

🕒 Project Time Estimate: 45 minutes

💰 Materials Cost: $6

Materials

  • Thrifted crochet tablecloth

  • Cotton thread to match crochet

  • Top to use as a pattern for the collar

  • 2 piecses of ribbon

Tools

  • Fabric chalk

  • Fabric scissors

  • Sewing needle

How To

Step 1: To begin with, lay out the crochet table runner flat on a flat surface. Place the top you want to use as a pattern onto the crochet runner. Make sure the collar is positioned in the middle of the crochet. Using fabric chalk, trace around the collar directly onto the crochet. Remove the top and cut out the circle using fabric scissors

Step 2: Thread cotton onto a sewing needle and sew around the collar to hem it shut. Make sure to sew down any loose threads. If this isn’t done, the crochet may begin to unravel.

Step 3: Put the crochet top on, thread a piece of ribbon through the one side and tie a bow. Repeat on the other side. The positioning of the bows, how big or long you would like them to be, and how many bows is entirely up to you. And that’s it!

The Reveal!

I cannot believe how beautiful this top looks, and that I made it myself using a crochet tablecloth, and it only cost me $8 and under 30 minutes to make. Crazy good! You could easily replicate this project using any crochet tablecloth or runner. If you do have a larger crochet tablecloth, all you would need to do is cut the pattern out and sew down the hems.
