Upcycled Abstract Pin Board

What do you do with rubbish that you would have ordinarily thrown in the bin?

You upcycle it to make an Abstract Pin Board! And so goes the story of my latest trash to treasure project. After I finished making my Arched Wall Library, I had pieces of hardboard offcuts and styrofoam sheets leftover and I knew I had to keep them, you know, just in case. Fast forward to today, I used batting and fabric from Lincraft and the same method to make my Wavy Bed Head (all the way back in August last year!) to transform trash into treasure! I now have a stunning place to pin my magazine clippings, fabric and bits’n’bobs in my studio that inspire all my projects you see here. Read on to learn how to make your very own Upcycled Abstract Pin Board. And remember, stop and think before you throw out offcuts and packaging away because they have so much potential! Plus, it feels pretty damn good knowing you can prevent more waste from ending up in landfill and create something beautiful and functional.

And to see how this Upcycled Abstract Pin Board came together, make sure you check out this video!

Project Details

🕒 Project Time Estimate: 1 hour

💰 Materials Cost: $60 (if you don’t own any of the materials in this project)

⚒️ Tools: Staple gun

👷‍♀️ Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate DIYer

Materials

  • Two pieces of hardboard (or thin MDF) cut into arches (or any other shape you like)

  • Styrofoam sheet from Lincraft

  • Selley’s Liquid Nails

  • Batting from Lincraft

  • Fabric from Lincraft

  • Staple gun

  • 10 pairs x 3M Velcro strips

How To

Start by gluing styrofoam sheets onto the cut hardboard. Flip it over and using a sharp knife, cut the excess styrofoam off the sides. Flip the hardboard over and cut the styrofoam at 45° - don’t worry if it’s not perfect.

Cut the fabric and batting to size and at least 10cm outside the edge of the hardboard/foam arch. Place the fabric face side down onto your clean work surface. Layer the batting on top, then place the hardboard on top, styrofoam side facing down. Pulling the batting and fabric tight (but not too tight, use the staple gun around the perimeter of the hardboard. Cut the excess fabric off and pull excess batting out from the back of the hardboard. Apply 5 pairs of velcro strips onto the back of each arch. Flip them over and place them onto the wall.

Ta daaaa! A trash to treasure moment, that’s for sure!

Don’t throw your rubbish and packaging away because it has so much potential! Well, that’s my life motto and it’s amazing what you can create with a little styrofoam and hardboard. Plus, it feels pretty damn good knowing I have stopped more rubbish ending up in landfill. I can’t wait to fill my Abstract Pin Board with more clippings, fabric and other pieces of inspiration over the coming months. And I couldn’t have done this without Lincraft, thank you!

This project is in collaboration with Lincraft.
