How To Make a DIY Pom Pom Wreath

Feeling festive? Let’s make a pom pom wreath for Christmas using materials you probably have at home!

Christmas is my favourite time of the year; everyone is merry, the weather is warming up and I’ll get to spend lots of quality time with my favourite people. For the last few years I’ve really enjoyed making a different wreath for our front door, including this DIY Bauble Wreath and this festive DIY Native Australian Flower Wreath. This year I wanted to create something different using what I already had at home. I found yarn, flowers, a cardboard box and fabric, so I decided to make a DIY Pom Pom Wreath!

And to see how this came together check out this video!

Project Details

✂️ Making: DIY Pom Pom Wreath

🕒 Project Time Estimate: 2 hours

💰 Materials Cost: $20

⚒️ Power Tools: None!

👷‍♀️ Skill Level: Beginner DIYer

Materials

  • Cardboard

  • Pencil, string and scissors

  • 3 rolls of yarn in white and cream

  • Pom Pom Maker. This one is less expensive. Or you can use cardboard to make pom poms, which is what I used to do when I was a kid!

  • String, but you can use yarn

  • White paint

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Faux flowers or branches from trees in your garden

  • Fabric

  • 3M hook to hang the wreath

How To

Step 1: Make the pom poms using yarn and your chosen pom pom maker; I have included a link in the Materials List for a YouTube tutorial showing how to make one using the cardboard method, which is what I used to do as a kid! You may need to trim the pom poms using scissors.

Step 2: Start by using the string and pencil method to draw two circles onto the cardboard (one should be smaller than the other) to make the backing for the wreath. Cut the wreath out using scissors and tie some string or yarn around the wreath; this will be used to hang the wreath. Paint the wreath white; this will hide the cardboard.

Step 3: Place the pom poms onto the cardboard wreath and play around with them until you are happy with the design. Using the hot glue gun, glue the pom poms onto the cardboard.

Step 4: Using the hot glue gun, glue the faux flowers in between the pom poms. Then glue the ribbon onto the back of the wreath so it’s hanging down the bottom middle of the wreath. Hang it up and that’s it!

Ta daaaa!

I thought I loved last years DIY Bauble Wreath but this is without a doubt equally as gorgeous IMHO. I love the simplicity of it and the colours; it’s cosy, festive and grown up. Best of all? You can choose any colour yarn, ribbon and faux flowers you like depending on your own Christmas decor. I can’t wait to see this wreath on your front doors this Christmas.
